Europe, the requests of industry in Lombardy

“La visione lombarda per il futuro dell’Europa” (Lombardy’s vision for the future of Europe) was the title of the initiative organised by Confindustria Lombardia and Politics Hub, an event held on Friday 10 May 2024 at the San Fedele Auditorium, Milan.

After the event was opened by the President of Confindustria Lombardia, Francesco Buzzella, speakers included the Minister for Foreign Affairs and Deputy Prime Minister, Antonio Tajani; the Defence Minister, Guido Crosetto; the Minister for Economy and Finance, Giancarlo Giorgetti; Matteo Renzi; and Carlo Calenda.

In Buzzella’s words: “Confindustria Lombardia was keen to organise this event because the future of Europe is at play in the European elections in June: the choice will be between well-being and competitiveness or industrial decline. We wished to convey to our leaders our hopes that the future European institutions will put industry at the centre of Europe once again, returning to invest in the only asset able to prevent the decline of our continent […] The reality that companies are currently faced with is well known: measures based on ideology instead of scientific data and methods, sometimes through lawmaking in contradiction with the green goals themselves; an uncertain regulatory framework which disincentivises investment; lack of competitively priced energy procurement sources; and reduced competitiveness, benefiting other global players. All this seems like the prelude to European deindustrialisation”.
